Other large retrospective studies in developing populations
Other large retrospective studies in developing populations
Future deaths from tobacco-related diseases will increase further over the next few decades, and the CTSU has established similar retrospective studies to those in China to monitor, and help control, this epidemic elsewhere.
For example, preliminary results in 50,000 people from Madras show that the main way smoking is causing death there is by substantially increasing the already high death rate from tuberculosis (TB): one million of the two million deaths/year worldwide from TB occur in India, and our results suggest that about half of those TB deaths would not have happened without smoking.
Other such studies being coordinated with, or by, CTSU include: Cuba (50,000 people); India (Trivandrum: 20,000); Mexico City (20,000); Russia (100,000 in 4 regions: with special emphasis on vodka use); Egypt (Suez: 20,000); Poland (10,000).
