Kadoorie - a blood-based prospective study of environmental and genetic causes of premature death in 500,000 Chinese adults
KSCDC is a collaborative project between CTSU and the Chinese National Centre for Disease Control, funded by the Kadoorie Charitable Foundation in Hong Kong . A total of 10 rural and urban areas throughout China have been selected for the survey. In each area 50,000 adults aged 35 and over will take part in the study, by completing a questionnaire on smoking and drinking habits, lifestyle, diet, environment and medical history. A number of measurements will then be recorded for each participant, including height, weight, lung function and blood pressure, and a blood sample will be taken for long-term storage. Over the next ten or twenty years, the health of participants in the study will be closely monitored, and those who die of particular diseases will be compared with those who do not. This study will help sort out the complementary roles of genetic factors and of environmental factors such as tobacco, infections and diet as causes of premature deaths in China, and could have important implications for disease control worldwide.
