General development of trials
In neurology, we have a close collaboration with the Edinburgh Neurosciences Trials Unit and have helped to design, run and analyse the completed MRC UK-TIA study of aspirin [65], MRC European Carotid Surgery Trial [66-68], and MRC International Stroke Trial of aspirin in acute stroke [69], and the ongoing MRC Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial, CAVATAS pilot study of carotid angioplasty and International Subarachnoid Aneurysm Trial (ISAT) of surgery versus endovascular procedures.
CTSU also has a close collaboration with the DH/MRC National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, and coordinated the MRC CLASP study of aspirin in pre-eclampsia [70], and assisted with the MRC OSIRIS trial of surfactant in pre-term babies, DH ECMO trial of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and on-going MRC ORACLE trial in threatened abortion.
In addition, CTSU helped to coordinate the QUASAR trial in colorectal cancer [71], and provided substantial assistance with the MRC AXIS trial in colorectal cancer, LIPID study of cholesterol-lowering therapy in Australia, and Auckland CTRU PROGRESS trial of antihypertensive therapy following stroke or TIA.
This general assistance role (which includes providing a central 24-hour computerised randomisation service for trials) is an extremely cost-effective part of our work as a UK and international trial centre.
