Collaborative meta-analyses of leukaemia trials
CTSU has been responsible for several meta-analyses of leukaemia trials [33-38] that have demonstrated definite survival improvements (e.g. with interferon in CML and with brief intensive treatment during maintenance in childhood ALL), or that have demonstrated that minimal treatment suffices (e.g. immediate chemotherapy in early-stage CLL, multiple drugs in advanced CLL, duration of maintenance in ALL, and interferon in myeloma produce little or no benefit).
Over the next few years, CTSU will conduct several more such meta-analyses, answering specific questions far more reliably than would otherwise be possible. For example, by obtaining data for each patient in all trials of CNS-directed treatment in childhood ALL, it may be possible to determine whether more intensive treatment is only necessary for higher-risk children.
