Chinese breast cancer trial
5000 randomised
This study aims to determine whether less extensive surgery than radical mastectomy (which is the standard in China) produces similar effects on survival, with less operative morbidity [51]. About 5000 women with operable breast cancer have been randomised between radical mastectomy versus extended simple mastectomy in 100 Chinese hospitals. In addition, since the EBCTCG meta-analyses indicated that ovarian ablation might improve survival [10], over 3000 pre-menopausal patients in the study have been randomised between ovarian ablation versus not (in the presence of other adjuvant treatment). The first results will be available in 2001.
