Established epidemiological laboratory services in CTSU

For the successful conduct of large-scale epidemiologic studies involving blood samples, there is a need for laboratories especially orientated towards the development of methods that are suitable for the particular constraints of such studies. CTSU has established its own epidemiologic laboratory, which is providing guidance on appropriate blood collection methods, developing many lower-cost high-throughput analytical and clinical chemistry methodologies (while retaining or increasing their reliability), routinely analysing tens of thousands of samples (with sophisticated computer quality-control and data-handling), and storing hundreds of thousands of plasma and white cell aliquots securely in our large computer-supervised liquid nitrogen facility for subsequent assay. This is allowing the conduct of some uniquely large epidemiologic studies of blood-based risk factors (such as lipids, albumin, coagulation factors, antioxidants, antibodies, micronutrients, and genetic markers).
